It's All Down to Characters
Welcome to Earth year 2026 and another transmission from the Cosmic Chasm. If you’re just joining us, buckle up and enjoy the ride! 🚀
I’m early into writing Cosmic Chasm (book five on my sci-fi side and the first in the new Rift Riders series), and I’ve been thinking about what makes stories linger long after the last page. For me, it always comes down to character.
The best sci-fi isn’t only about tech, ships, or explosions. It’s about people. Survival. Loyalty. Sacrifice, and the impossible choices we make under pressure. Sci-fi lets us explore big questions: Who are we becoming? What do we owe each other? How do we stay human when the world changes faster than we can keep up?
My one hard rule: no amount of advanced technology gets to replace real stakes. Tech should create harder decisions, not easy solutions. Sure, I love a good space station explosion, but the stories that stay with me are the ones where I care deeply about the people navigating the chaos. When a character’s choice changes who they are, that’s where the real magic happens.
That’s what I’m striving to create at the heart of Cosmic Chasm. Yes, there’s outer-space weirdness and reality-threatening anomalies, but at its core, it’s a tale of fear, hope, connection, and what it means to stay human when everything is on the line.
Now your turn: Which sci-fi stories have characters you keep coming back to? Drop them in the comments. 👇
